What is a Keyword Density Checker?
Paste your page copy and get the terms it actually uses, as counts and percentages, for single words or for two and three word phrases.
Common words are filtered out by default. Counting them produces a table whose top rows are the, and and of, which tells you nothing about the page.
There is no density figure to aim for. Search engines stopped counting keyword occurrences a long time ago, and writing to hit a percentage produces copy that reads badly and ranks worse. The useful question this answers is different: is the thing at the top of the list the thing this page is supposed to be about? If a page meant to sell accounting software is dominated by the word template, that is worth knowing.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good keyword density?
There is no target, and any tool giving you one is selling a practice search engines abandoned years ago. Write for the reader. Use this to check the page is about what you intended, not to tune a number.
Why are common words excluded?
Because including them means the top of every table is the, and, of and to, for every page ever written. Filtering them is what makes the list say something. You can switch them back on.
Why look at phrases rather than single words?
Because people search in phrases. Two and three word counts show which combinations your copy actually uses, which is closer to how a query is formed than isolated words are.
Is my copy uploaded?
No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing is transmitted.
