What is an XML Sitemap Generator?
A sitemap is a list of the URLs you want crawled. It does not make pages rank, but it makes them findable, which matters most for a new site or for pages nothing links to yet.
Paste one URL per line and download a valid sitemap.xml. Duplicates are removed, anything that is not an absolute http or https URL is skipped and reported, and ampersands are escaped so the file actually parses.
Priority and changefreq are optional and off by default, because Google ignores priority entirely and largely ignores changefreq. Lastmod is the one hint that still carries weight, and only when it is honest. A sitemap claiming every page changed today teaches a crawler to distrust the whole file.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I put the sitemap?
Usually at the root, as example.com/sitemap.xml, then reference it from robots.txt with a Sitemap line and submit it in Search Console.
Does a sitemap improve rankings?
No. It helps discovery, which is a different thing. Pages still have to earn their position, but a page that is never crawled cannot rank at all.
Should I include priority and changefreq?
Generally no. Google has said it ignores priority and mostly ignores changefreq. They add bytes and no signal, which is why both are off by default here.
How many URLs can one sitemap hold?
Fifty thousand, or fifty megabytes uncompressed. Beyond that, split it and reference the parts from a sitemap index.
