Use the Discount Calculator

What is a Discount Calculator?

Shops advertise the percentage. What you actually want is the number at the till.

Enter the original price and the discount, and get the price you pay and the amount saved. A second discount can be stacked on top, and GST can be added to show the real payable amount.

Stacked discounts are the part people get wrong. Thirty percent off followed by a further twenty percent off is not fifty percent off, it is forty four, because the second cut applies to the already reduced price. The tool shows the effective single discount so the two are never confused.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 30% then 20% not 50%?

The second discount comes off the reduced price, not the original. On 1000 rupees, 30 percent leaves 700, and 20 percent of 700 is 140, so you pay 560. That is an effective discount of 44 percent, not 50.

Is GST added before or after the discount?

In India GST applies to the discounted value when the discount is shown on the invoice, so the tool applies it after the discount. If a discount is given later as a credit note, the treatment can differ, so check the invoice.

Can I work backwards from the sale price?

Yes. Enter the original and the final price and the tool shows the discount percentage that connects them.

Does this handle any currency?

Yes. It is arithmetic on whatever number you enter, so the currency is whichever one you are thinking in.
