What is a Weight Converter?
Recipes in ounces, gym plates in pounds, body weight in stone, shipping in kg: weight units refuse to standardize.
One value in, all units out, using exact conversion factors (1 lb = 453.59237 g).
Two places the arithmetic actually bites. Baggage: 50 lb is 22.68 kg and 23 kg is 50.71 lb, so the two limits airlines quote are not the same limit. Gym plates: a 20 kg bar is 44.09 lb, not the 45 lb bar racked beside it, and 20 kg plates on a 20 kg bar total 132.28 lb against 135 for the imperial set.
Frequently asked questions
Is a tonne the same as a ton?
No, and the gap is wide. This converter uses the metric tonne: 1,000 kg, or 2,204.62 lb. A US short ton is 2,000 lb (907.18 kg) and a UK long ton is 2,240 lb (1,016.05 kg). Neither is offered here, so if a document says plain “ton”, convert through pounds and ask which one it means.
Are fluid ounces the same as ounces?
No: a fluid ounce measures volume and an ounce measures mass, and this page converts mass only. The confusion has a real root, because an imperial fluid ounce was defined as the volume of one ounce of water. For anything denser or lighter than water, a recipe in fluid ounces needs a volume conversion instead.
Pounds to kg quickly?
Divide by 2.2 for a close answer; the exact factor is 2.20462 lb per kg.
What is a stone?
14 pounds ≈ 6.35 kg: still standard for body weight in the UK and Ireland.
Mass vs weight?
Strictly these units measure mass; “weight” is everyday usage. On Earth the distinction rarely matters outside physics class.
Troy ounces for gold?
Not here: troy ounces (31.103 g) differ from the avoirdupois ounces this converts.
