What is a PPF Calculator?
The Public Provident Fund runs for fifteen years, compounds annually, and has a deposit ceiling of 1,50,000 a year. It is one of the few places where the maturity amount is genuinely predictable, provided the rate holds.
Enter your yearly deposit, the rate and the number of years, and the tool returns the maturity value with a table showing the balance at the end of every year.
The rate is the one number to be careful with. PPF is reset by the government every quarter, so no calculator can tell you what it will be in year twelve. Treat the figure here as an assumption and check the current rate rather than planning around a number a web page told you.
Frequently asked questions
What is the PPF deposit limit?
One lakh fifty thousand rupees per financial year across all your PPF accounts. Anything deposited above that earns no interest and is simply returned, so the tool warns you if you go over.
Is PPF interest tax free?
PPF is in the exempt-exempt-exempt category: the deposit qualifies for deduction, the interest is not taxed, and the maturity amount is not taxed. That is what makes the effective return higher than the headline rate suggests for a taxpayer.
Can I withdraw before fifteen years?
Partial withdrawal is allowed from the seventh year, within limits, and loans are available earlier. Full closure before maturity is only permitted in specific circumstances. This calculator assumes the money stays in.
Why does the rate change?
The government reviews small savings rates every quarter. A calculator that hardcodes a rate will be wrong within months, which is why the rate here is an input.
