Use the HTML Minifier

What is an HTML Minifier?

HTML minifying removes comments and the whitespace between tags, which on a large page is a meaningful share of the bytes before compression.

Paste your markup and get the minified version with the byte saving.

The important part is what is left alone. Whitespace inside pre and textarea is content, not formatting, and collapsing it changes what the page renders. Script and style contents need their own minifiers rather than a blunt whitespace pass. All four are protected here, and conditional comments survive too.

Frequently asked questions

Will minifying break my layout?

It should not. Whitespace between block elements is ignored by the renderer. Be aware that whitespace between inline elements is significant, so a space between two inline-block items disappearing can close a visual gap. This tool collapses runs to a single space rather than removing them entirely between tags with text.

Does it minify the CSS and JavaScript inside the page?

No, and deliberately. Those contents are left exactly as they were. Use a dedicated minifier for each, because a whitespace pass over JavaScript can corrupt it.

Is it worth it with gzip enabled?

Less than people assume, since compression already handles repeated whitespace well. The saving is real but modest, and the bigger wins are usually images and render blocking resources.

Is my markup uploaded?

No, it is processed locally in your browser.
